Google Docs: the tool for the 21st century classroom

From Google blog:

"Docs also teaches organizational skills. Students create folders to keep up with assignments. The most important folder is the folder students share with the teacher. All graded writing goes into this folder, and it serves as a writing portfolio for the semester.

Each student folder is in a group class folder. The class folder contains each student's writing for the semester:

Each student's online writing portfolio folder is also shared with his or her parents. Parents can even comment on student work and participate in the revision and editing process.

For students, Google Docs is an invaluable tool in the writing process. Students do not need a flash drive to carry drafts to and from home. Also, students can share writing with peer editors."

With Google Docs, you can create and share online documents, spreadsheets and presentations. It's free. You can:

1) Access your documents online from any computer with an internet connection.

2) Add collaborators to your document and Docs will send them a link to access the doc online (no need to send email attachments back and forth).

3) Decide who can view and edit each document (only you, some people, or everyone).

Hard drive in the cloud: Use Google Docs to upload any file up to 250 MB

From Google Docs Blog:

Google Docs we will be rolling out the ability to upload, store and organize any type of file in Google Docs. You'll be able to upload and access your files from any computer -- all you need is an Internet connection.

You can upload to Google Docs any file up to 250 MB. You'll have 1 GB of free storage for files you don't convert into one of the Google Docs formats (i.e. Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations), and if you need more space, you can buy additional storage for $0.25 per GB per year.

Combined with shared folders, you can store, organize, and collaborate on files more easily using Google Docs.

I frequently use Google Docs for a variety of projects. It has some limitations but overall is a very useful service. Recommended.
